For Security of Your MySQL Databases
Backing up MySQL databases may seem like such a waste of time, even though you know you should.
What if the backup files are never needed?
For most of us, it's hard to admit that something catastrophic could happen.
• The Bell
A bell hangs in a tower. It's up out of the way — without a pull cord so it can't be rung inadvertently.
It's perfectly safe. It's unthinkable that the bell would ever ring.
But somehow, a bird gets into the tower. It flys around trying to get out of the strange, enclosed space.
The frightened bird flys into the bell.
And the bell rings.
Because things happen how they do is why Database Back Up and Restore V2 keeps getting upgraded as technology changes.
A bell can't be unrung. File corruption can't be undone.
But files can be replaced from backup files. And the bell falls silent — for now.
• Storage Devices Can Fail
Because even storage devices can fail, critical data needs to be backed up in at least two ways.
If your hosting company doesn't specifically back up your MySQL databases, then make an extra copy of the backup files created by Database Back Up and Restore V2. Keep the extra copy on a different device at a different location.
• Un-critical Files
This is subjective, of course, but some blog posts, ads, images, and perhaps other data might not be so very critical, perhaps just serious or precarious — assuming they can be recreated within, say, a week, or if you have copies scattered about somewhere on your computer.
Really critical data can't be recreated — or would take so long that a person might as well restart their business from scratch.
• When the Bell Rings
When a file is corrupted or lost, that file is gone. You can't unring a bell.
After the bell has rung, you have up to two chances to create the file anew:
Recreate from memory and clues lying about.
– or –
Restore from backup.
Which is your method?
• But, Will It Restore?
If you need to restore your data, can you do it?
Does your current backup system's restore mechanism actually work — on your server? Have you tested it?
Data can become corrupted. And it's possible for backup restore software to have a bug.
Will your hosting company say, "Oops! Sorry. But the backups have a glitch. You can rest assured we'll address this issue as soon as possible with the aim of preventing a repeat."
• Three-way Protection
The Database Back Up and Restore V2 software is for MySQL databases and tables.
It is designed to make both backing up and restoring as flawless as possible.
• § Backup Protection
Backups can be done in either of two ways, or both ways:
Automatically with a cron schedule.
– and/or –
Manually as seems prudent.
Just do it.
• § Restore Protection
The backup files are plain text and JSON formatted for most reliable restoration.
They contain database, table, and size information as well as the data itself. It's designed that way for resiliency.
• § Restoration Resilience
As an example of restoration resilience, let's say restoring to the old database is problematic. A new database can be created and the data restored into that.
As another example, let's say you want to restore at a different server. Create a database at the new server and restore into that.
As a third example, let's consider the highly unlikely scenario that you have the backup file but somehow you no longer have access to Database Back Up and Restore V2. Any software that can read JSON data can be used to extract the backed-up information.
