Page Load Counts By Device

After we redesigned a site to be responsive to various screen sizes, we ascertained that over 70% of its page loads are requested by a mobile device, mostly phones.

I'm glad we made the site responsive to small screens no later than we did.

When we redesigned Blogs Just In, it was made responsive without debate. Because it is a blog listing site (consider submitting your blog), we expect a high percentage of mobile users.

Different types of sites undoubtedly have different computer/mobile percentages.

Do you know how many people using mobile devices access your site compared to people using computers?

Knowing the percentage of mobile page loads to computer page loads is important information when trying to decide which of several websites to make responsive first.

The software accompanying this article provides the information. It counts page loads by device. It can report the numbers per device and/or their percentages.

The page load counts by device software can be run on websites with recent versions of PHP available. It's even WordPress friendly.

Use the software on your domains and know what their numbers are. It can be important information.

Installing the Software

The software is installed as three separate files, each file in the same directory.

  1. The mobile detection script, Mobile_Detect.php

    This is a wonderful script written by Victor Stanciu, Serban Ghita, and Nick Ilyin. They did a good job. The latest version can always be picked up at https://github.com/serbanghita/Mobile-Detect

    The version available as of this writing is further below. I encourage you to go to the above URL and click the "Download" link to ensure you have the latest version.

    The script does all the heavy lifting to determine what kind of device is requesting the page.

  2. The page load recording script, DeviceStatRecording.php

    This script simply records the page load for the type of device determined by Mobile_Detect.php.

    The script maintains three data files, one for each type of device — computer, tablet, and phone. When a page is loaded, it adds a character to the appropriate file.

    Because one character is added to the file for every page load by a type of device, the file size itself is an accorate account of the number of page loads.

  3. The counts reporting script, DeviceStatCounts.php

    And this script reports the statistics as recorded by DeviceStatRecording.php.

    Because the file sizes of the three files (computer, tablet, and phone) is a count of the number of page loads by that type of device, the files never have to be opened and read. Their files sizes are used, instead.

    The script will report either or both the counts and percentages for each device, depending on your preference.

So, let's get started.

First, decide in which directory on your server the software will run in. In that directory, create a subdirectory named DeviceStats.

Then:

  1. Copy the code for each of the three scripts below.

  2. Save the code as the recommended file name.

  3. Make customizations where required.

  4. Upload the software into the directory you decided on.

Here is the code:

// Two places to customize.
//
// Place 1:
// Specify the subdirectory name where the page load count files are to be maintained (probably DeviceStats).
// This will be the same subdirectory as specified in file DeviceStatCounts.php
// The subdirectory must be writable. If permissions 755 doesn't work, try 777.

$FilesDirectory = "DeviceStats";

// Place 2:
// Specify the file name of the mobile detection script (probably Mobile_Detect.php).
$MobileDetectLocation = "Mobile_Detect.php";

//
/* End of customization */

$MobileDetectLocation = "./$MobileDetectLocation";

There are two places to customize:

The $FilesDirectory value needs to be the subdirectory name where the page load count files are to be maintained. This value won't need to be changed unless the subdirectory name is something other than DeviceStats. The subdirectory must be writable. If you run the software and no files are created or updated, try changing the subdirectory's permission to 777.

The $MobileDetectLocation value needs to be the file name of the mobile detection script Mobile_Detect.php. This value won't need to be changed unless you rename Mobile_Detect.php.

Save the code as DeviceStatRecording.php and upload it.

There are three places to customize:

The $FilesDirectory value needs to be the subdirectory name where the page load count files are maintained, the same directory specified for file DeviceStatRecording.php

The $ReportClicks value needs to be true or false (no quotes) depending on whether or not you want the number of clicks reported.

The $ReportPercentages value needs to be true or false (no quotes) depending on whether or not you want the percentage of clicks reported.

Save the code as DeviceStatCounts.php and upload it.

Using Page Load Counts By Device Software

In the directory where the software will run, you now have three files ("Detect.php," "DeviceStatRecording.php," and "DeviceStatCounts.php") and a subdirectory ("DeviceStats").

Two different things can be done with this software:

  1. Record page loads by device.

  2. Read the counts and percentages of the recorded page loads.

Here's how to do them.

Recording page loads by device.

Somewhere on your web pages put this JavaScript (WordPress instructions follow):

<script async src="https://example.com/php/DeviceStatRecording.php?JS"></script>

Replace "http://example.com/php/DeviceStatRecording.php" with the URL to the DeviceStatRecording.php script you installed previously. (Do not remove the ".JS" as it must be appended to the end of the URL of DeviceStatRecording.php — it would work without the appended ?JS, but may spawn a JavaScript warning.)

For WordPress, put the above JavaScript into a Text widget instead of directly on web pages.

Reading the counts and percentages of the recorded page loads.

To read the counts and percentages, type the URL of the script DeviceStatCounts.php into your browser.

The Shifting Numbers

When the numbers first come in, the percentages may be wildly different than the actual. That's because of the small sample size.

As more page views accumulate and give you a larger sample size, the percentages will adjust to be closer to an actual average. The percentages can then be better relied upon to be a valid projection of near future use.

To use the numbers as a projection for far future use may be unwise. Technology is changing so fast that device use may shift faster and in different directions than expected.
